Common Storage Temperature Conditions of Blood Products
Red Blood Cells (RBCs) are stored in refrigerators between 1-6ºC.
Platelets are kept between 20-24ºC with constant agitation.
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) is stored in specialised freezers at or below -18ºC.
How can you confidently identify blood products temperature threshold?
- Non-reversible temperature-sensitive indicators: These small, inexpensive labels are attached directly to the blood bag.
- They are monitor the core temperature of the blood bag and provide a visual color change from white to blue if the product is exposed to temperatures outside of the safe threshold.
