Timestrip I.V.™

Helping compliance with infection control procedures

Hospital-caught infections are a significant global problem: infection rates in developed countries typically run at 5% -10%. In the UK, MRSA costs the NHS
£1 billion a year. Timestrip I.V.™ is an easy-to-use, accurate timing device which helps hospital staff comply with infection control procedures.

Accurately measuring elapsed time
With 60% of blood infections caused by intravenous lines, it is crucial that hospitals have procedures in place to change IV lines regularly. Timestrip I.V.™ was developed to help tighten hospital infection control procedures in relation to the dwell-time of Peripheral IV Cannulae (PVCs). NHS guidelines state that PVCs should be checked daily and changed every 72 hours, to reduce the risk of infections. Failure to comply with this policy increases the risk of MRSA, but the question is how to ensure that whoever checks the site of the cannula knows exactly how long it has been in place.

By measuring elapsed time, Timestrip I.V.™ provides medical staff with a clear, accurate visual prompt when it is time to change a PVC. Indication of when to change IV lines has traditionally been hand-written on to charts or dressings; Timestrip I.V.™ can be attached directly to the surface of a dressing or to a wristband and is instantly and easily legible for patients and visitors as well as staff.

Hospitals come on board
The Whittington Hospital in North London was the first to trial Timestrip I.V.™ and to raise awareness of its potential, which has now been recognised by many hospitals in the UK, Europe and the US. Vygon UK Limited, a major player in the cannulation device market, is the main UK distributor for Timestrip I.V.™, which is also listed in the NHS Supply Chain catalogue.

Benefits speak for themselves
With infection control a priority for all hospitals, the benefits of adopting Timestrip I.V.™ technology are convincing:

  • Accurate, clear and easy to use
  • Helps attain and maintain highest infection control protocols
  • Engages patients in their own care
  • Helps improve patient satisfaction and confidence in service

A simple timing device for intravenous lines, providing a visual indicator of how long they have been in use.

The Problem
Cannulas breach the skin and need to be checked regularly for signs of infection. Because staff may not know when an intravenous line was
fitted, current timekeeping methods can be inaccurate.

The Solution
An inexpensive, simple and accurate timing device that changes colour to indicate how long an intravenous line has been in use, and how soon it will need to be checked or changed.
